If a medieval pilgrim reached Santiago de Compostela, he got himself a scallop to show that he really visited the grave of Saint James. This was the prove of his pilgrimage. Some pilgrims even went further to the "end of the world" - to Finisterre - to collect a scallop by themselves from the shore of the ocean. Some people also say, that this palm sized shells were used to clean the sleeping place of the pilgrim or to cut bread and sausages. Experimental archaeology has proven that that is really possible with these big shells. The stability of a scallop is so good that even a hard sausage could be cut with it.

To the modern pilgrim, the scallop is a distinctive mark in every form. People to which a grown up 15 cm in diameter scallop is to much have nowadays few possibilities for alternatives. We want to change this.

Our scallop is the cast of the right cap (arched side) of a real, small shell that was reworked to be worn as a pendant. A wide eye on the backside of the shell makes it possible to use nearly every necklace or string to this scallop. The small size of 20 x 21 mm paired with a low weight makes this scallop to a neat accessory that tell the knowing: "I'm a pilgrim of Saint James!". To imagine the size and weight better: The size of the shell equals about the size of a 5 Cent coin and the weight is comparable to that of a 1 Cent coin. The piece of jewelry will be delievered in sterling silver and in gold. The surface is lightly polished to accentuate the structure of the shell. This surface treatment sets discreet light reflections which gives it a nice shine. That way it can be worn either on a pilgrimage as well as on a evening social event.

Accordingly we deliver the scallop on a leather thong or on a necklace. If you want to wear the scallop on a leather thong you have the choice between the following colors: natural, dark green, black, intense red or royal blue. Please consider that dyed thongs will loose dye and color you skin due to sweat and wetness. This problem doesn't occur with the natural leather thongs.
